- The present research aims to investigate the practical application of the Minimum Required Attention (MiRA) theory of Kircher and Ahlstrom (2017) in standardized test scenarios. This was done by assessing driver attentiveness in relationship with driver performance in a safety-critical driving scenario in a driving simulator study. Driver behaviour and compensation strategies while performing non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) were investigated in a car following scenario were the lead vehicle suddenly braked. The NDRTs were modified versions of the standardized Surrogate Reference Task (SuRT) presented at two levels of difficulty (easy vs. difficult) as well as with and without time constraints for completion (no time constraint vs. 4 s completion time) to simulate self-paced vs. system-paced NDRTs. Participants were instructed to engage in the NDRTs while driving if they felt that road and traffic conditions allowed them to focus their attention on the NDRT. Results indicate that the difficulty of NDRTs had a higher impact on safety indicators of driving performance than the pacing of NDRTs. The research findings (1) provide a scenario and associated performance indicators to evaluate the distraction potential of continuously presented self- and system-paced NDRTs and (2) highlight the importance to evaluate gaze behaviour in combination with driving performance in test scenarios aiming to determine a minimum required attention with an established link to safety risk.
