- Abstract (EN)
- Background: Adolescents are often considered adult pedestrians, though they are characterized by unique risk-taking behaviours. Objective: We examined the influence of playing a smartphone game app on the road-crossing behaviour of adolescents relative to younger children and adults while varying the app complexity and the environmental load conditions. Hypothesizing that game use will affect crossing behaviour, and road crossing metrics will vary by age, complexity of the game, environmental load. Method: Nineteen teenagers (aged 16-17), twenty-one adult students (aged 23-27), and twenty-seven children (aged 9-13) made twelve road crossing decisions in a dome-simulated environment while playing the smartphone game (no game, high and low complexity) in two environmental load conditions. Results: There was a three-way interaction between age, game complexity, and environmental load. Higher environmental load led to smaller safety gaps and in the less busy environment, the high complexity game use caused risky crossing decisions for all ages. Yet, no pronounced differences in safety gap were found, between adolescents and adults. Response time differences between adolescents and adults were found, for the low game complexity. Conclusion: Environmental and smartphone app use distractions affect pedestrian road-crossing behaviour. Adolescents show some similarities to younger children and some similarities to adults, depending on the environmental and game difficulty and the outcome measurement. Impact and application: Awareness of environmental distractions and how they affect adolescents requires more investigation.
