- Abstract (EN)
- Epilepsy is a neurological disorder affecting around 50 million people worldwide, with cognitive impairments in attention, memory, and executive functions. These cognitive impairments may impact driving behavior, often leading to restrictions. To our knowledge, very few studies have explored subjective driving practices and habits in people with epilepsy. This study aims to investigate how epilepsy influences driving practices, difficulties, and perceptions compared to non-epileptic individuals. An online questionnaire was distributed to drivers aged 18 and older with a valid driver’s license, gathering data on driving behaviors, difficulties, and coping strategies. The results revealed that individuals with epilepsy reported fewer driving difficulties, including in cognitively demanding situations, than non-epileptic drivers. This may be due to coping strategies used by people with epilepsy. Indeed, epileptic drivers also reported more avoidance behaviors and compensatory strategies, like planning outings during the day. These findings highlight the adaptations made by individuals with epilepsy to manage driving, though further research using objective measures is needed to better understand the impact of epilepsy on driving.
