- Abstract (EN)
- In the literature, autonomous vehicles (AVs) are often claimed to provide independent mobility to those unable to drive, including children. AutoELF is a high-fidelity AV prototype specifically developed and designed for children. Although children were able to solve many tasks related to the operation of infotainment system when interacting with autoELF in a previous usability study, they often expressed or acted uncertain about the task solutions. In this study building on a previous usability study by Stange et al. (2025), children received system-induced auditory feedback and solution prompts to reduce uncertainty. N = 19 children received either (1) a solution prompt and feedback, (2) feedback only or (3) no feedback. The feedback was applied in a Wizard-of-Oz design. They solved eight tasks such as storing luggage or starting autoELF. We measured usability by assessing the effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction after each task, as well as satisfaction with the solution prompt. To measure the effectiveness and efficiency the children’s behaviour was videotaped. The results showed that the solution prompts improved effectiveness and efficiency and the children liked the solution prompts. The feedback, however, did not prevent the children from arriving at incorrect solutions. This study shows that AVs could provide children with more independent mobility if children are supported in the operation of the AV. Auditory feedback strategies using solution prompts are an accepted and effective way to assist children in interacting successfully with an AV.
