- Abstract (EN)
- Although heated tool welding has been an established welding process for joining semi-finished products made of polyethylene for decades, systematic investigations in the past have been limited to wall thicknesses of about 20 mm. However, sustainable infrastructure projects are being carried out with increasing dimensions and wall thicknesses for example in the field of renewable energies. In a previous study, heated tool welding of high wall thicknesses up to 100 mm according to DVS was systematically analysed for the first time. Significant strength gradients between the centre of the seam and the edge area were observed during the examination of the weld seams in the long-term tensile creep test. Thus there are doubts as to whether the established welding process according to DVS can be applied to such large dimensions. Due to the lack of scientific studies, the parameters in the DVS guideline were extrapolated, resulting in very long process times for high wall thicknesses. For this reason, the goal of the present study is to reduce the strength gradients by optimising the welding process strategy for high dimensions. The results show that the strength gradient can be reduced by shortening the cooling time under pressure.
