- Abstract (EN)
- Superelastic shape memory alloys (SMAs) are gaining increasing importance across various fields of application, ranging from medical devices and actuators to the relatively new elastocaloric systems for heating and cooling. Despite their diverse use cases, one critical requirement unites all these applications: high surface quality. In the medical field, biocompatibility is strongly influenced by surface condition, while in actuator and elastocaloric applications, surface integrity significantly affects functional fatigue and long-term durability under cyclic loading and unloading. Accordingly, postprocessing methods are required and will become even more important as new component geometries are explored in the future, such as thin sheets or complex structures produced by additive manufacturing. The aim of this study is to evaluate the suitability of Pulse Electrochemical Machining (PECM) for post-processing Nitinol SMAs. Therefore, a comprehensive characterization of the electrochemical dissolution behaviour, and the influence of the specific material characteristics is performed on an industrial PECM machine.
